Spotlight News and the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) announced today that many of INN’s 250 member newsrooms will be aggregating their 2020 election coverage on Spotlight. Their coverage will be fed into the Spotlight platform, and then featured on an Election 2020 dashboard so readers can explore content produced by the network, while other newsrooms can also explore the dashboard for coverage that might be relevant for their users as well.

INN newsrooms are composed of reporters, editors, and producers that have been recognized by a constellation of news-industry awards, including Pulitzers, Emmys, Peabodys, DuPonts, and laurels from the Society of Professional Journalists, Investigative Reporters and Editors, and many others.

“We are thrilled to be adding these widely-respected journalism names to our rapidly-growing digital platform,” said Spotlight founder and CEO Tamer Morsy.

Election content from the INN partners is expected to begin appearing on the Spotlight website and mobile app in the coming weeks for the 2020 elections and continuing for coronavirus news. INN members will receive a share of the revenue Spotlight derives from their content appearing on their platform.

“INN members, all nonprofits, are increasingly relying on earned revenue to keep their newsrooms operating,” said Jonathan Kealing, INN’s chief network officer. “This opportunity to distribute content via Spotlight News is a great way to see that trend continue and to give people the news they need in these fast-changing times.”

About Spotlight News

Launched late last year, Spotlight News is dedicated to supporting and increasing the reach of news publishers as they face the challenges of the 21st-century. Spotlight offers these publishers state-of-the-art digital tools for both desktop and mobile applications and pledges to return to them 70 cents of every advertising dollar their content generates on the platform. Aspiring to be “the Netflix for news,” Spotlight launched as a free experience for readers, who can create customized news feeds defined by publishers or by areas of interest. It expects to roll out a premium offering featuring subscription-only content in the coming months. The platform already features more than 100 universities, local and national publishers.
